The Hawks picked up three of six possible standings points during a three game weekend, defeating the Fargo Force Friday, falling in a shootout to the Dubuque Fighting Saints Saturday, and losing to the Des Moines Buccaneers on the road Sunday. Tony Cameranesi had a point in all three games, finishing the weekend with a goal and two assists. Waterloo scored the first goal and outshot their opponents in all three contests. The results moved the Hawks within one point of the Lincoln Stars for second in the USHL Western Conference.
Approaching a Milestone
The Hawks’ first goal Friday was scored shorthanded by Max Edson, the ninth shorthanded goal by Waterloo this season. The current total is the most since 2003-2004, when the Hawks also notched nine “shorties.” Reliable USHL statistics on shorthanded goals date back to 1989-1990, and in that time, the most recorded by Waterloo in one year were twelve in 1999-2000. Brian Knaeble tied for the league lead that winter with five.
Big Commitments
With James Hansen’s commitment to Bemidji State last week, the Black Hawks roster currently includes 15 players committed to an NCAA Division I university. Three others who have skated for Waterloo this winter (Justin Kloos, Jay Williams, and Joe Rehkamp) are also committed to colleges. With those 18 players, the Black Hawks have already surpassed their total of 17 from the 2010-2011 season.
Road Ready
Black Hawks captain Aaron Pearce has been at his best when Waterloo has been on the road. With an assist in Sunday’s game against the Des Moines Buccaneers, Pearce has 13 points (seven goals, six assists) and is +14 after climbing off the Hawks’ bus. During home games, he has two goals, two assists, and an even plus-minus rating. Last winter, Pearce scored ten of his 16 points at home.
Last Big Loss
The Black Hawks have not lost a game by more than four goals this season. The last defeat of that magnitude was on the road against the Dubuque Fighting Saints on December17th, 5-1. The Hawks return to Dubuque’s Mystique Ice Center for the first time since that game this Friday. Although Waterloo is 0-2-0 in that building this season, during 2010-2011, the Hawks claimed all three matchups that were played there.
